They may not seem like it but crawl spaces and basements are a very vulnerable part of homes. They happen to be a place where a lot of plants or fungi can excel. They can develop leaks, so water is going to be filtering into them. Once that happens you can bet that the rest of your home is in jeopardy. What is worse about all of this is the fact that a lot of people have these problems and do not notice because they do not visit these areas frequently. There are some main problems that you have to watch out for, that we are going to discuss in the next paragraphs. We will also let you know how we can help!
Water Is A Mortal Enemy of Basements
There is really no way around this. Water and basements just do not get along. If you find an excessive amount of moisture in your basement then it may be time to pick up the phone and give us a call. The problem will not only be that the furniture that you have in the basement may get ruined. Remember that most homes have a lot of wood in their makeup. This material does not fare well when you put it up against water!
These are literally special covers that are put on the walls in basements or crawlspaces to make sure that water or even moisture does not penetrate them. These plastic-like coverings need to be applied with an airtight seel directly on the walls of the basement. The idea is that these sheets will not allow moisture to filter through and even be part of the environment within the basement. We talked about how actual water is a problem, so is moisture in the air. A lot of moisture can help develop mold. This is not a nice guest to have in your home.
Mold is a fungus that forms on the walls and other areas within your crawl space or basement. We already talked about how the excessive amount of moisture can contribute to forming mold. Mold can not only cause your home’s overall structure to deteriorate as it will stick to the wood and weaken it, but it can also get your family sick. The spores released by certain types of mold have been known to really make humans fall ill. That is another reason why you may want to have your home inspected every once in a while. What we will do is try and remove as much mold as we can and make sure that we make it difficult on the mold to continue to develop.
Again we find ourselves in the subject of water running through your home. The actual problem that you have could be directly in your drainage system. If that is the case we can either repair the drain and concrete that we believe is causing the problems. In extreme situations, we will redirect the drain to allow it to fall in a different direction.
